McCullough’s The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris
If
you can get past his beginning, dull pages, this is a great book. McCullough
uses memoirs, letters, and diaries to describe Americans’ experiences living in
Paris in the 19th century. Those who left such writings were mostly
writers and artists with the notable exception of Elihu Washburne who was the
American ambassador to France under President Grant.
